Choosing the best automobile in the world can never be an easy task. Taking into account the multiple segments, and more importantly the constant evolution of automobiles that is taking place at such a rapid pace choosing the best of lot becomes all the more difficult.
The international jury at the 2011 ‘World Car Awards’ comprising of sixty-six (66) top-level automotive journalists (including the Editor-in-Chief of ZigWheels) from twenty-four (24) countries around the world were expected to do just that.
The all electric Nissan Leaf, the spectacular new Audi A8 and the best-selling BMW 5 Series were chosen as the three finalists for the most prestigious awards of the event from an initial entry list of thirty-nine (39) new vehicles from all over the world.

Observing that the 5-seater, 5-door zero emission EV from Nissan was indeed the world’s first purposefully built, mass market electric car to ever show real potential, the World Car Awards jurors were convinced that the Nissan Leaf, which since its launch has globally been the most awarded green car till date deserved nothing short of the ‘World Car Awards’ owing to its path breaking technology and emission free on road performance capabilities.
Taking immense pride in the Leaf’s historic victory at such a grand international automobile stage, Nissan Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn said, “This accolade recognizes Nissan LEAF, a pioneer in zero-emission mobility, as comparable in its driving performance, quietness and superb handling to gas-powered cars. It validates Nissan’s clear vision and the values of sustainable mobility that we want to offer to customers around the world.”
Strictly on the performance side, the World Car Awards jurors observed that the Leaf’s low center of gravity produced sharp turn-in with almost no body roll and no understeer. This made the Nissan Leaf feel just like a normal car, but only quieter.
Worthy of every award that it has ever been presented the Leaf’s revolutionary technology and sturdy performance has secured it the 2011 World Car Award status, and has given it a special place in the list of previous ‘World Car Award; winners, which include the Volkswagen Polo, the Mazda Demio, the BMW 3-Series and the Audi A6.
